Design & covers

Look, cover compose, multiple covers in the studio, and the public covers gallery.

Design dialog

Book design is one dialog with three sections: Look, Cover, and Interior. Open it from the editor header path, from the properties sidebar Design button, or from the phone Design sheet. The same cover tools stay in this studio. /covers is the public gallery of those covers — not a second designer.

Look

Look is the template gallery. Official designs are grouped by intent — All, Nature, Water, Sky, Scholar, Classroom, Language, Numbers, Reference, and Modern. Choosing a look applies page structure, type scale, and cover theme as a starting point. You can still change Cover and Interior afterward. Studio remembers the filter you last used.

If the book came from a generator package, Studio suggests looks that match the book_type and columns (numbers, verbs, phrases, reference, and so on).

Cover

Cover is a compose canvas, not a single stock image. The library has three tabs:

  • Background — Field washes first (lake, laterite, harvest moon, Kivu shore, night market, and more), then cloth, paper, and line. Use as a full-cover fill or drag a patch onto the cover.
  • Artwork — marks for the whole cover, or drag one onto the cover as a placed layer. Groups (Nature, Numbers, Language, Voice, Scholar) are a dropdown.
  • Frame — pick a border in the library; edge distance, weight, and color sit in the right inspector next to the cover. Artwork and background color also live in that inspector, with Use default color to follow the look accent again.

Drag from the library onto the canvas, or drag existing layers to reposition them. Pointer drag and HTML5 drop both work so artwork does not have to be applied as a silent click. You can also upload an image cover. Layers can be moved, resized, duplicated, or cleared.

Cover copy and type

Title, subtitle, author, languages, badge, and footer are fields. Editing the title here updates the book title. Defaults credit Kifuliiru Lab and Wekify unless you replace them.

In the editor, select a field and use the properties sidebar for color, font, and size. Readability treatments (off, material blur, gradient scrim, type lift, ambient soften) help title type sit on a busy background.

Interior

Interior is five tabs, not only page size.

  • Layout — cards or table for imported rows, optional format override, and which columns are visible (for example hide French if you only need Kifuliiru and English).
  • Page — size (A4, Letter, 6×9, 5×8), portrait or landscape, and margin presets (normal, tight, print).
  • Chrome — running header, page numbers, header text, and the first page number.
  • Colors — number color, translation color, and table header color on data pages.
  • Sections — include Intro, About, and Contact pages. Generator books often ship those in English, French, Kiswahili, and Kifuliiru. You can also supply custom intro HTML.

These settings travel in book_settings when you save, so desktop export uses the same geometry. See the format reference.

Covers gallery and new covers

There is one studio. Design → Cover can start New cover — another book in the library that begins on the cover. New cover with this look on Look does the same from a selected template. Two pages is enough to publish. A title with almost no manuscript is still a Kifuliiru book waiting for a writer.

/covers lists Kifuliiru Lab catalog covers and covers you have designed on this device. Opening a catalog cover creates that book in the studio so you can write it. Covers you design appear in the On this device filter.

Import a .ked-cover.json in the editor if you have a portable cover file. Export a cover PNG from the header when page 0 is selected.
